| Opus 40 |
| |
Opus 40 is a monumental environmental sculpture rising out of an
abandoned bluestone quarry in High Woods, Saugerties, N.Y. Covering
more than six acres, it is made of hundreds of thousands of tons of finely
fitted bluestone, constructed stone by stone over a period of 37 years. It
is all the work of one man: sculptor Harvey Flite. Opus 40 is a total
artistic environment. You can walk through, around, and over it, from
the deepest recesses of its lower pathways, around the pools and fountains,
and up to the nine-ton monolith that is the center and summit of Opus 40.
Or you can sit in quiet contemplation of a work of art and its relationship
to the grandeur of nature around it.
